Chiang Mai Highlights: Ban Ton Pao

Chiang Mai has any number of tourist villages where you can see artisans at work creating handicrafts. Possibly my favorite though has to be the Saa (mulberry) Paper Village of Ban Ton Pao. It doesn't have the same tourist draw as other villages, so it's much quieter. And, more importantly, it has paper - lots and lots of paper! Not to mention, color by the truckload...

It's an easy village to walk around (although possibly not very comfortable in the hot season!). You'll come across both small and large outlets with an awesome selection of mulberry paper products - cards, gift bags, gift paper, blank books, photo albums, gift boxes, frames - in a huge variety of colors and designs. In fact, it could be a little hard to decide what to buy and what to leave behind...

While you're there, you can also get a firsthand look at the paper-making process...

Definitely a worthwhile trip if you happen to be in Chiang Mai!

Thanks for putting in an explanation and the collages. I am so enjoying this. And I miss it so. I've only been to Chaing Mai once but I loved it. Do you have any pictures of the umbrella makers? They were my favorite. It's snowing here in Maryland by the way...

Hi JJ - you totally do. It's great!

And Puna, you're welcome! And the umbrellas are coming soon. Unfortunately, I don't have as many photos as the light started to give way. I can't believe it's snowing over there. Here it's already hitting the hot season - so much for winter!
